When I entered business school in 2007, my cohort was encouraged to be introspective, a self-exercise to find what we were really passionate about accomplishing. The goal was to find one’s passion and pursue a function inline with that passion.
In light of the present state of the economy, I wonder if professionals, young and old, still have that option. Of course I know the answer to this question. Query any out of work factory worker in Detroit and you will hear a resounding, “screw your passion!” So the fact is, I have had to mourn the death of my youth driven optimism and have had to replace it with the stone-faced cynicism of my grandfather.
My problem is that I can’t hide my disdain when I am constantly confronted with applying for positions that I know that I am overqualified for. After eighteen years of education being limited to working as a barista at the corner coffee shop or a friendly customer service associate is heart aching.
I can’t say that I wasn’t warned. During my second year of graduate studies my father phoned and told me that a storm was upon us. That in a storm, one must attach their ship to the closest port. His warning fell on partially deaf ears because I felt there was no way that after the forgone opportunity cost of pursuing my M.B.A. could I be left without a port to attach my ship to. I likened his words to that of an older trusted confidant, whose real world weathered pessimism was readied at a moments notice to dash the dreams of a starry-eyed junior. His words were to be taken with a grain of salt because he wasn’t the enlightened M.B.A. that I was.
