War between young and old when it comes to driving skills

Seven out of 10 drivers aged under 25 identified over-55 drivers as hazardous, while 56 per cent of the mature-aged group thought the same of younger road users, according to a survey of more than 2500 Australians by national motor and home insurer AAMI.

P-plater Bronte Maguire, who considers herself a sensible driver, said driving under the speed limit was as potentially dangerous as exceeding it.

"I personally find old people really dangerous on the road because they drive far too slow and erratically. They're so timid and I feel like, if I make any sudden movements, they will freak out and crash into me."

The dental assistant said it was unfair to generalise and stereotype young drivers as "hoons".

"I believe there are really irresponsible drivers my age but at the same time I don't think everyone is like that," she said.

Survey results showed youngsters considered themselves "better than average" drivers while over-55s considered themselves the safest.
